Crete is the largest and the southernmost of the Greek islands, and has such a varied and spectacular landscape that it is often described as a miniature continent. The islands rich biodiversity offers everything from golden sandy beaches with crystal clear waters to high mountains with alpine vegetation. Lush fertile plains with mild winters contrast to the dramatic desert areas in the south where in certain inlets and dried out river beds the endangered palm species Phoenix Theophrastus can still be found.
The flora of Crete is one of the most interesting and significant in Europe consisting of 1742 different plant species, 177 of which are endemic. Trekking through the Cretan landscape in spring is a joy to the senses with myriads of flowers blossoming and the air filled with their scents. ( photo )
